Upgrades are optional, but with new rules likely coming this year it's probably not a bad idea. You can buy an upgrade pack, which gives you access to all upgrades for another year.

You purchase from within the software, or by visiting www.logbook.com, and going to My Account > Buy It and selecting Upgrade Pack.
